Galvanized wire is a type of steel wire that has been coated with a layer of zinc to protect its core from rust and corrosion. This process significantly extends the wire's service life, making it one of the most widely used and cost-effective types of corrosion-resistant wire available.
Electro-Galvanizing (Electroplating)
The steel wire is immersed in an electrolyte solution and acts as the cathode. Zinc anodes are also present. When an electric current is applied, zinc ions are dissolved from the anodes and deposited onto the surface of the steel wire.
Produces a smooth, bright, and shiny surface.
Less zinc is used, making it generally less expensive.
Suitable for general purpose or indoor use where exposure to harsh elements is limited.
The thin coating allows the wire to remain very soft and pliable, ideal for twisting and weaving.
b) Hot-Dip Galvanizing
Clean, prepared steel wire is passed through a bath of molten zinc at around 450℃ (840℃F). This creates a metallurgical bond between the zinc and the steel, forming a series of zinc-iron alloy layers, topped with a outer layer of pure zinc.
The coating is much heavier and offers superior protection.
More zinc is used, increasing the cost but also the longevity.
Ideal for outdoor, humid, marine, and harsh industrial environments.
The surface is rougher and less shiny, often showing a characteristic crystalline pattern known as "spangle."
The thicker coating makes the wire stiffer and less flexible.
The zinc coating acts as a physical barrier. Even if scratched, the zinc sacrificially corrodes (sacrificial anode) to protect the underlying steel.
The high-carbon or low-carbon steel core provides excellent tensile strength and mechanical properties.
Cost-Effectiveness: It offers a very favorable balance of performance and price compared to other corrosion-resistant metals like stainless steel.
Available in a wide range of diameters and coating weights for various applications.
Measured in millimeters (mm) or by standard wire gauge (SWG, BWG). Common sizes range from very fine (e.g., 0.2mm) to thick (e.g., 6.0mm+).
Measured in grams per square meter (g/m²), indicating the thickness of the zinc layer. Standards like "Regular Coating" or "Heavy Coating" are common.
